Oboist Kristen Cooke is a Doctorate of Musical Arts candidate at the University of British Columbia. In addition to her work with Ventos, Kristen performs frequently as a solo and orchestral musician. In 2017, she performed a solo recital tour in the United Kingdom as a Royal Over-Seas League Emerging Musician. She is also in demand as an orchestral freelancer, including concerts with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, and Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. Kristen is a passionate educator and loves talking to both her students and audiences about the exciting world of the oboe.
Originally from Ottawa, Kristen holds the degrees of Bachelor of Music from Wilfrid Laurier University and Master of Music from Boston University. Her principal instructors have been Beth Orson (Vancouver Symphony), Jim Mason (Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony) and Mark McEwen (Boston Symphony), as well as masterclasses with Chip Hamann, Sarah Jeffrey, Alex Klein, and Hansjorg Schellenberger. Her additional summer training has included the National Academy Orchestra, Domaine Forget, Orford Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Young Artist Program.
